Winter cruises on the Danube in Budapest (November to March) are a unique and especially enjoyable experience that combines the city’s famous landmarks along the river with a pleasant winter atmosphere. We have had the chance to take quite a few cruises in Budapest during winter and we fully recommend it.
Cruises in Budapest operate year-round, including during the winter and even in very cold weather conditions. The boats are equipped with heated indoor areas with large panoramic windows that allow you to enjoy the cruise without having to go outside when it is extremely cold, and many cruise companies also offer hot drinks such as mulled wine or hot chocolate.
Daylight hours get shorter in winter in Budapest, with sunset around 16:30 to 16:45, so we recommend aiming for a cruise that starts slightly before sunset or the first departure right after sunset. This way you will see the transition between day and night and get to see the Parliament building, Buda Castle and Budapest’s famous bridges illuminated beautifully in the dark. It is a wonderful experience you should not miss.
In terms of winter operating schedules, you will find daylight cruises between 13:00 and 17:00 (every hour), and evening cruises between 17:30 and 20:30. Dinner cruises usually depart in winter between 19:00 and 20:30. Most cruises depart from the central pier area of Budapest on the Pest side between Elizabeth Bridge and Chain Bridge. You can get there easily using Budapest’s excellent public transport with Metro line M1 or Tram 2.
Among the recommended operators, Legenda City Cruises is considered one of the most popular. It offers daily or evening sightseeing cruises with heated panoramic glass boats. Prices are 20 euros for a daytime cruise (70 minutes) or 25 euros for an evening cruise (60 minutes), including a welcome drink and an audio guide in 30 languages. Silverline Cruises also offers a variety of options, including a cocktail cruise in the evening (32 to 37 euros for one hour with two cocktails) or a four course dinner with a piano or folklore show (from 77 euros, 2 to 3 hours).
Hungaria Koncert is suitable for culture lovers, with a Hungarian buffet dinner cruise and live folk dance show (89 euros, 1.5 to 2 hours), including two drinks and a full route. For budget seekers, Mahart offers public cruises (10 to 15 euros or free with a BKK public transport pass) with hop on hop off and internal heating, ideal for winter. Duna Cruises operates authentic nineteenth century steamships (8 to 16 euros, 60 to 75 minutes) with a small maritime museum on board.
Despite the natural concern, cruise boats in Budapest are well equipped for winter cold and offer heated indoor areas with large panoramic windows that allow you to see the entire waterfront without sitting outside. However in the end everyone wants to go out for at least a few minutes to the upper deck to take the best photos, so it is better to arrive dressed warmly so you can step outside comfortably without freezing.
To secure a good seat on the boat, we strongly recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the cruise begins to get a good spot in line. This is another good reason to dress warmly since waiting in line is outdoors.
We recommend booking tickets in advance to secure a date and time that works for you. You really do not want to arrive in the cold only to discover that the tickets for the current departure are sold out and then have to wait half an hour for the next one or start looking in the cold for another cruise company. You can pre-book tickets on GetYourGuide, Tiqets, or Headout
