Home > Plan Your Trip > Budapest Sightseeing Cruise Route Overview
Almost all cruises and boat tours in Budapest sail on a fixed circular route within the city limits, between the area of Margaret Bridge in the north and Liberty Bridge or slightly south of it. This is the stretch where all of the city’s main monuments are concentrated, which is why sightseeing cruises usually last 60 minutes, or 90 to 120 minutes in dinner cruises.
Along the route the boat passes under the sequence of Budapest’s iconic bridges, including Margaret Bridge, Chain Bridge, Elizabeth Bridge and Liberty Bridge. Between the two banks of the river you see the main landmarks. On the Buda side you can clearly see Buda Castle on the hill, the Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, and Gellért Hill with the statue and viewpoint. On the Pest side the highlights are the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Shoes on the Danube memorial to Holocaust victims, and the hotels and promenade along the Vigadó.
Some operators extend the cruise further south, beyond Liberty Bridge, toward the National Theatre area and the Palace of Arts in the MüPa complex. This variation is more common in evening and dinner cruises of 90 to 120 minutes and is usually operated on larger vessels (for example by Hungaria Koncert or by some of the cruises of Legenda and Silverline). This is not a new route but rather an extension of the urban axis.
MAHART and some public cruises offer a daily Hop-on Hop-off route with the option to get off at stops along the urban segment including on Margaret Island in the active seasons. In summer there are sailings slightly further north around the island, and at times it is possible to disembark on the island, walk around, and return on the next sailing.
